King Headboard Ideas

A king headboard is the finishing touch to your king sized bed, without it your bed is naked!

You have, quite wisely, decided to sleep in a king sized bed now crown it with the right king sized headboard.  It is the centerpiece of your decorating scheme and can make or break its effectiveness.  Make your bed and your headboard in particular the statement piece in your bedroom, keep everything else clear and simple to make your king size bed and king headboard stand out.

People often over look the importance of their beds; they see them as somewhere to rest after a strenuous day and little else.  Your bedroom should be your sanctuary, the retreat in a busy world where you can relax and forget about the stresses and strains of the outside.  It should be a reflection of your personality, be that rich and opulent, cool and sophisticated or wild and wacky.  Yes it is important to get the right mattress to support you and enable you to sleep well, but it is also important to choose the right headboard to support your sense of style!

When choosing a headboard it can be difficult to decide between the many different materials available, should it be metal, wood, fabric or even leather? We discuss the various pros and cons of these materials in greater depth below.
Metal can compliment both modern and traditional schemes.  For a modern scheme choose a clean angular design that will complement your bedding and soft furnishings.  If you want a more traditional design an intricate filigree metal pattern may be more appropriate.  Metal headboards are often painted or covered in a protective coating; care needs to be taken to maintain this avoiding chips and scratches.

Wood is seen as a traditional choice often combined with other pieces of bedroom furniture in the same type of wood. Whether it is a rich cherry or warm pine, wood has long been a favorite for headboards, its texture and grain give it warmth and mellow with age.  It does not require the same level of maintenance as metal as the odd knock and scratch can be passed off as natural patina.

Upholstered fabric is a popular choice for king headboards.  It can be coordinated with your bedding and curtain material or the same fabric can be made into a custom headboard.  As well as being beautiful to look at fabric is soft and warm to touch.  If the cover is fixed on the headboard, rather than a loose cover, it can be difficult to clean.  There will always be that coffee splash no matter how careful you are, so consider having a loose cover or treating it with a stain resistant coating.

Leather is becoming a popular choice in bedroom decorating schemes not just on chairs but on beds, cushions and even curtains.  Like wood it is seen as a natural material that can age well, it is comfortable like fabric but is easily wiped clean.  Its natural colors work well in earthy neutral schemes, where as black or white can be the centre of a strong dramatic scheme.

Whatever material you decide to go with make sure you measure your bed carefully and buy a king headboard that will fit your beds fixing points.  Most fixings are standard but occasionally they may vary.
